Israeli strikes kill at least 17 in northern, central Gaza
At least 17 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes on central and northern Gaza on Wednesday, New Year’s Day, Palestinian government officials and local media reported. The strikes hit a house in the northern Gaza Strip’s Jabaliya area and also hit the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the strikes, but earlier on Wednesday it warned people to leave Bureij after militants fired rockets from the area. The Israeli military said it had killed Abd al-Hadi Sabah, a Hamas militant who helped lead the incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli military warned on Wednesday that it would intensify its air strikes on Gaza if Hamas did not stop firing rockets. The fighting in the Gaza Strip is widespread, with about 90 percent of the territory’s 2.3 million people displaced.
