New Year’s Day Russian Attack Kills 2 in Kyiv
In the early hours of the first day of the new year 2025, Russian drones fired missiles at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, killing two people and wounding at least six, damaging buildings in two neighborhoods, Ukrainian officials said. The attack partially destroyed a second-floor apartment building in central Kyiv, killing two people, the state emergency service said.
At the same time, the National Bank of Ukraine said a nearby bank building had been hit by debris from a drone. Even as people were celebrating the New Year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media that Russia was focused on how to hurt Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military has shot down 63 of the 111 remotely piloted drones that Russia launched overnight into several regions of Ukraine, while 46 of them crashed due to mechanical failure, the Ukrainian military said. Meanwhile, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian artillery, rocket launchers and remotely piloted drones have also been used, damaging seven homes and a medical facility, according to Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Serhiy Lysak.
